This series originated with a routine trip through the car wash. As I was studying the patterns and colors on my windshield, I suddenly decided to snap off some photos with my phone. Noting some of the more interesting frames, I later pulled those images through various editing apps. As I mirrored the images and applied different effects, I started seeing complex creatures and designs emerge through the water and bubbles. The water seemed to lend itself to vibrance and whimsy.
The great appeal of this series is leaving the initial creative springboard to chance. I simply use the images on my phone as a starting point and push along the evolution to something more interesting. While some images are more straight-forward, others have an intriguing Rorschach effect. I’m often amazed at interpretations that are so far from my own as I was creating the image. As a result, I’ve decided it’s more interesting to simply number the images, as opposed to assigning titles. The dialogue around the images is as much fun as the creative process.
